Moving

As you may have noticed we haven't used this blog for the past 18 months, this is due to the fact that we were trying to keep it pretty formal. But we have been active in our practice and would like to show you that. So, we have set up a tumblr page which we will update two or three times per week with images from our archive and extras from our current project. We will also post any news concerning our practice on there, so please check it out, and keep up to date.

Many Thanks

Ben Absalom & Sam Bardsley

News

We are pleased to announce that we will be exhibiting at Ffotogallery in Cardiff next month as part of the group show 'This Unfolds'. The exhibition will run from August 18th until September 3rd, with the opening night on August 17th. Here's a synopsis of the show from the gallery website:

This Unfolds is a group exhibition featuring a small selection of the many exciting new photographic artists working across Wales today. Engaging with a range of themes and ideas, what links these artists is an interest in storytelling. Presenting a variety of approaches to narrative construction, their work reveals open-ended views into other lives, other worlds, somewhere between documentary truth and fiction.

We will be showing a selection of images from the project 8X's. We are excited as this is the first real opportunity we've had to consider how the project could work on a gallery wall as opposed to book form.

Hope to see you there.

News

Here's some good news that we've had to hold back on until the official press release came through. Needless to say we're very excited to have the opportunity to be working with Steidl and can't wait to get the ball rolling.

Photobook Prize for Young Photographers: Steidl Student Book Award The Steidl Student Book Award is a new prize for young photographers to be presented every two years. European universities and art academies with a focus on photography are invited to nominate book projects from students who have graduated no longer than two years before. A changing independent jury of critics, curators and teachers then selects the winning book project. The prize itself consists in the realisation and distribution of the book by Gerhard Steidl and Steidl Publishers. The inaugural award was presented this year as part of the “next 1” forum in Essen and was given to the project 8X’s by Ben Absalom and Sam Bardsley, who had been nominated by the European Centre of Photographic Research at the University of Wales in Newport. The jury consisted of Ute Eskildsen (Director of the Photography Collection in the Museum Folkwang, Essen), Silke Grossmann (Professor of Photography at the Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg), Kristina Hasenpflug (Consultant for Culture at the Wüstenrot Stiftung, Ludwigsburg), Elke Seeger (Professor for Photography and Photo Design at the Folkwang Universität der Künste), and Kerstin Stremmel (art historian, Cologne). In 8X’s Absalom and Bardsley explore and revive the landscape of their childhood in South Wales, a landscape built atop a network of tunnels originally used in 1939 by the military and later by civilians. 8X’s employs different photographic genres, combining them with contemporary and historical images as well as diverse texts. The book will be released in 2011 by Steidl Publishers.

Also Brighton Photo Biennial is opening on the first weekend of October, it's curated by Martin Parr and looks to be showing some very exciting new work. It is also the going to be the worlds first ever frameless photography festival so should be quite interesting. Here's the link to the official site. www.bpb.org.uk

Related to this we showed the project 8x's at the last Biennial fringe festival as part of bystander collective. www.bystandercollective.org.uk

Paris Film

A film composed of around 2000 35mm photographs taken around the periphery and in the suburbs of Paris, set to the speed of 12 frames per second. The film has had to be severely compressed to make it viewable online so please bear in mind the image quality isn't as it should be.

News

The book project 8X's has been nominated for the following award as part of Next One photography festival in Essen, Germany, 17-22 May 2010.
Steidl Book-Prize
For the first time this photobook prize will be awarded, offered by Steidl Publishers to support young photographers. It does justice to the importance of the photobook as a medium which by now plays an important role as a means of artistic expression. Ten professors at European universities and colleges have each nominated one book project by a student who graduated no more than two years ago. The nominees will be invited to show their designs at a presentation on 21 May in Essen. The prize is the realisation of the winning book by Gerhard Steidl / Steidl Publishers. A jury, consisting of two university professors, Ute Eskilden, Kerstin Stremmel, and Gerhard Steidl, will announce its decision on 22 May, as part of next 1.
